ABSTRACT - Introduction: The use of knowledge generated in Universities and Research Centres, organizations in the health sector – public and private, for-profit and non-profit – is a crucial vector for the development of the healthcare system. Effective Knowledge Transfer and solid collaboration between these sectors and organisations is essential. This research aims to contribute to optimisation the dynamics of Knowledge Transfer from Universities and Research Centres to the different actors in the health innovation ecosystem in Portugal. Methodology: The approach adopted in this study was observational, cross-sectional and quantitative, based on the application of questionnaires to professionals with experience in research or research and innovation projects in health, with 68 valid responses. Descriptive statistical analysis allowed us to characterise perceptions of Knowledge Transfer for the improvement of healthcare and to identify the factors promoting Knowledge Transfer, as well as the barriers and mechanisms predominant in Knowledge Transfer. Results and discussion: There is a consensus regarding the importance of Knowledge Transfer in promoting innovation, fruitful collaborations and, consequently, improvement of the Health System. However, constraints related to limited financial and human resources, an organisational culture that is not very collaborative and tangible impact on society remain and must be mitigated. Conclusion: Knowledge Transfer contributes directly to the development of the health system, but still faces several structural challenges that require a reinforcement in the development of policies with social and innovative impact.
