dc.description.abstractAlthough vertebrates display a wide diversity of body shapes and sizes their basic body plan is consistently organized into head, neck, trunk and tail structures. During development, the vertebrate main body axis is generated sequentially from head to tail, first by the activity of the primitive streak and later on by the tail bud. Progenitors within these regions, located at the posterior embryonic end, progressively supply cells that will build the different body tissues as the embryo extends along its main body axis. Although this is a continuous process, head and trunk development is controlled by distinct gene regulatory networks that lead to differing cell dynamics and generation of specific tissues.pt_PT
