| dc.description.abstract | O Oeste apresenta-se na cultura norte-americana como um espaço idealizado com caracter-ísticas peculiares, permitindo que se tornasse um local propício à construção de diversos mitos que até aos dias de hoje marcam os Estados Unidos da América. As viagens dos primeiros colonizadores em direcção ao Oeste norte-americano e os seus diversos relatos permitiram que a população de Este criasse determinadas expectativas sobre aspectos como a paisagem, a população nativa ou as novas oportunidades que o território poderia oferecer, tendo simultaneamente sido construída a ideia de fronteira, espaço onde o indivíduo é igualmente idealizado e onde surgem diferentes figuras com características próprias que correspondem a uma concepção de herói americano. The Call of the Wild (1903) de Jack London apresenta todas estas temáticas, pelo que o presente artigo pretende não só observar de que forma a obra retrata o mundo selvagem mas também como a figura do herói, aliada a concepções de masculinidade que percorrem o ideário americano, está frequentemente envolta em ansiedades relacionadas com a incapacidade de atingir o mesmo. Da mesma forma, tentaremos também perceber que idealizações são de facto subvertidas ou não, principalmente através de Buck, e o que poderão as mesmas simbolizar tanto no contexto da história como no panorama cultural americano em geral. The West presents itself in American culture as an idealized space with unique characteristics, allowing it to become a place where various myths flourish and shape the United States of America until today. The journeys to the West undertaken by the first settlers and their accounts contributed to create certain expectations in Eastern people regarding Western landscape, native population or the new opportunities that the place could provide, while simultaneously constructing the idea of the frontier, a space in which the individual is also idealized and where different figures emerge, each with their own peculiar features that shape the concept of hero for the Americans. The Call of the Wild (1903) by Jack London approaches all these concerns, which is why this article intends to observe how the book portrays not only wilderness but also how the figure of the hero, together with conceptions of masculinity that are ingrained in Americans' collective memory, is frequently connected to anxieties about the inability to live up to it. Similarly, the essay will also try to understand which idealizations are in fact subverted or not, especially through Buck, and what they may symbolize in the novel and in America's cultural panorama. | en |
