The urban transformations of the 3rd and 4th centuries in Olisipo – an overview

dc.description.abstractFrom the late 2nd to the early 4th century the cities of Hispania underwent a series of urban transformations marked both by phenomena of abandonment and occasional investment, in apparently contradictory rhythms (Brassous & Quevedo, 2015a; Andreu Pintado, 2017). The causes for this apparent urban crisis are still debated. However, it is clear that not all affected cities reacted in the same way, with capital cities showing some recovery during the 4th century whilst other, smaller centres never recovered, ultimately being entirely abandoned (Arce Martínez, 2015, p. 314). The situation in Olisipo fits perfectly the symptoms of urban crisis and transformation found throughout the cities of Hispania. The case of Olisipo is particularly interesting given the explicit testimony of the reconstruction in 336 CE of the city’s public baths, the Thermae Cassiorum, promoted by the Provincial Governor. Adding to its well-known commercial importance, this seems to attest that the city had some administrative relevance. Entre os finais do século II e o início do IV, as cidades da Hispania passaram por uma série de transformações urbanas marcadas por fenómenos de abandono e por momentos pontuais de investimento, denotando ritmos aparentemente contraditórios (Brassous & Quevedo, 2015a; Andreu Pintado, 2017). As causas para esta aparente crise urbana são ainda alvo de debate. Contudo, é evidente que os diferentes centros urbanos reagiram de forma diferente, contando as cidades capitais com alguma recuperação durante o século IV, ao passo que alguns centros urbanos de menor dimensão nunca tornariam a recuperar, resultando no seu eventual abandono (Arce Martínez, 2015, p. 314). O panorama verificado em Olisipo enquadra-se nos sintomas da crise urbana e fenómenos de transformação verificados no resto da Hispania. O seu caso é particularmente interessante devido ao testemunho explícito da reconstrução de um edifício termal público, as Thermae Cassiorum, promovida pelo Governador da Província. Este dado, somado à sua comprovada importância comercial, poderá também atestar a relevância administrativa da cidade.  en
