Realizaram-se provas de protecção no ratinho, contra o vírus amarílico, em 295 soros sanguíneos colhidos em crianças com menos de 15 anos de idade, todos naturais e residentes nas ilhas que constituem a província ultramarina de S. Tomé e Príncipe. Não foi encontrado qualquer soro positivo.
Aponta-se a discordância com os resultados obtidos em 1934, por uma missão da Fundação Rockefeller, que em 75 amostras encontrou 4 soros positivos. Estes pertenciam a indivíduos com idades que variavam entre os 18 e os 45 anos.
Perante as condições climáticas – clima equatorial – e a existência de Aëdes em quantidade, se existisse vírus amarílico, entre os 295 sangues agora examinados, alguns forçosamente teriam sido positivos.
Julga-se que os 4 sangues positivos encontrados em 1934, pertenceriam a trabalhadores que tivesses provàvelmente vindo de outras províncias ultramarinas, onde teriam adquirido a infecção, ou mesmo sido vacinados.
Crêem portanto os autores, que não existe vírus amarílico nas ilhas de S. Tomé e Príncipe.
Summary Neutralization tests in mice against yellow fever virus were performed in 295 blood sera collected in children under the age of 15 years. All of these had been born in S. Tomé and Príncipe islands and were living there. There were no positive result. The disagreement is pointed out of the results obtained in 1934 by a Rockefeller Foundation survey in which amongst 15 samples 4 positive sera were found. Those sera belonged to individuals with ages between 18 and 15 years. In view of the climatic conditions – equatorial climate – as well as the existence of Aedes in quantity if yellow fever vírus existed there, surely that some positive sera should be found amongst the 295 sera examined now. The 4 positive sera found in 1934 are supposed to be of labourers who might had come from other overseas territories where they had got the infection or even that they have been vaccinated before. For this reason the authors believe that yellow fever virus does not exist in S. Tomé and Principe islands.
