The attainment of nativeness in oral production is an area which has received little attention in recent years, due to the prioritising of intelligibility and comprehensibility as the goals of pronunciation instruction. There are strong arguments for focusing on intelligibility in second language (L2) pronunciation instruction, since this must be considered the minimum which learners need in order for their utterances to be understood. However, even if the goal of instruction is intelligibility rather than nativeness, there still needs to be a target accent to use as the model if intelligibility is compromised. As there is evidence that nativeness is strongly implicated in intelligibility and that many learners still wish to work towards nativeness in L2, this research focuses on Standard British English as the target of instruction. The aim of the current study was to investigate two important issues pertaining to pronunciation modification. Firstly, it aimed to add to the research into phonological self-awareness, which suggests that learners may not be aware of how they sound to others in their L2, but intervention might help them to gain greater self-awareness. Secondly, it aimed to evaluate the relative effectiveness of two different approaches to the teaching of pronunciation: a bottom-up approach versus a top-down approach and to evaluate whether either, or both interventions were superior to the Control Group, who received exposure to the target accent without instruction. The bottom-up approach was structure-led, following a contrastive analysis approach to segmental and suprasegmental instruction, which predicted possible areas of native language (L1) interference for speakers of European Portuguese learning L2 English. The top-down approach involved helping students to gain an awareness of the social and psychological influences on their L2 accent and introduced holistic learning strategies which might help them modify their accent, such as mimicry and role play. Findings indicated that many participants’ phonological self-assessment did not match that of native-speaker raters, but that intervention helped to raise their self-awareness. Findings also indicated that the intervention groups outperformed the Control Group post intervention in that native-speaker mean rating scores showed greater change towards nativeness. However, no significant difference between the two intervention groups was evident.pt_PT
