| dc.description.abstract | This research elucidates the burgeoning significance of data semantics in the context of large organizations, employing a case study of Nokia Network and Solutions as an exemplar. Data semantics, an amalgamation of the study of meaning (semantics) and the analysis of facts and numbers (data), presents a compelling avenue to comprehend and structure data for enhanced value. The high degree of perplexity intrinsic to large organizations, emanating from the surge of diverse data sources, underpins the urgency for a robust data semantics model. This paper investigates Nokia's data semantics model, focusing on its impact on supply chain operations and decision-making. The exploration extends beyond the surface-level understanding of data semantics to delve into the construction and dynamic modification of models in response to fluctuating industry requirements. By adopting a quantitative approach and leveraging secondary data sources, interviews, and existing data from Nokia, the study juxtaposes Nokia's data semantics model against other cases and literature, creating a tableau of comparisons to distil key similarities and differences. The literature review covers two principal sources, Ceravolo et al., 2018 and Dibowski et al., 2020, providing a comprehensive analysis of their primary objectives, findings, and the eventual implications of these outcomes. The exploration of semantics in big data management and the usage of semantic technologies in data lake management provide a robust backdrop to this research, helping underline the limitations of current solutions and the potential for future advancements. The research underscores the burstiness and volume of data in large organizations, revealing the limitations and challenges of current data semantic models while stressing the importance of cataloguing, provenance, and access control. The study also veers from the traditional focus on big data, centring instead on the utility of data semantics in regular data management, illuminating its transformative potential in adding value to operations. This paper anticipates that by illuminating the importance of data semantics through the lens of the Nokia case study, the readers will appreciate the utility and value that data semantic models can bring to large organizations. The research also aims to provide substantial contributions to the discourse on data semantics, laying a path for future inquiries and advancements in this sphere. | pt_PT |
