Resumo(s)

Covilhã, located on the southeast slope of Serra da Estrela, had two important industrial centers on the beds of the Goldra (southern section of the city) and Carpinteira (northern section of the city) streams. This city specialized in textile production between the 15th century and the first decades of the 20th century, earning the nickname ‘factory city’ or ‘Manchester of Portugal’, due to the large concentration of factories specializing in wool production, becoming thus a relevant case study to understand industrialization in Portugal. This study focuses on the industrial landscape of Ribeira da Carpinteira, seeking to demonstrate how this area was occupied by the textile industry, especially from the 17th to the 20th century, through the application of methods of interpretation of landscape archeology, using primary data from prospecting, cartography, inventory and documentation. The objective is to obtain a holistic view of how the landscape and its resources were used and influenced this area of the city, including the use of water, the morphology of the land, the climate of the region and its impact on the culture and toponymic marks of the streets. Like most cities in the industrialized world, Covilhã has suffered from deindustrialization and the subsequent abandonment of old factory buildings, which currently face the risk of destruction due to urban growth. This scenario results in the decontextualization and potential loss of this industrial landscape, highlighting the need to renew interest in the study and preservation of this cultural landscape
