From data to discovery - Communicating the importance of mathematics and statistics in life sciences

Academic institutions, such as universities and research units, have become central to strengthening the relationship between science and society and over the past 20 years we have seen a rise in activities related to the public communication of science within these organisations. Despite this growing activity, science communication endeavours at these types of institutions are still restrained by a series of limiting factors. This report is the result of a four-month internship at the Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling at the University of St Andrews (CREEM) whose focus is to develop and apply statistical methods to answer ecological research questions. Here, we describe and discuss the work involved in the improvement and development of the public engagement activities of the centre that aim to communicate the importance of Mathematics and Statistics in Life Sciences. This report further discusses our results when doing these same activities among our target audiences. Even though institutions like CREEM are still very limited by the short availability of resources for science communication, its researchers recognise the importance of communicating their work to wider publics and show keen interest in improving their institution’s science communication practices. Finally, we explore how drawing from the expertise of other disciplines related to science communication, such as informal science education, can help scientists develop and improve their public engagement activities and practices.
