Resumo(s)
This research explores the character networks in the works of Eça de Queirós and Machado
de Assis, two crucial figures in Portuguese and Brazilian literature. Through social network
analysis, this project aims to understand character structures and compare the results
between the two authors to investigate similarities and disparities since both authors are
from the same period. Regarding the results, it is possible to observe that Queirós's
narratives show larger and more hierarchical networks; this suggests a diverse but less
connected interaction structure between characters. At the same time, Assis's books have
smaller and denser networks, indicating strong internal connections and integrated
community structures, but with a lower level of complexity. Both authors' works have
negative assortativity, meaning that characters tend to interact with those dissimilar to
themselves. With time, as the authors got experience, the network structures in their work
evolved, with later works showing more complexity compared to the beginning of their
careers. However, Assis’s networks remained relatively smaller compared to Eça de Queirós.
