We were asked to briefly present some data on the most common diseases in the region where we work and on the diet and hygiene of the indigenous people, which would contribute to demonstrating the efforts of the Catholic Missions in providing health care to the indigenous people. It is purely and exclusively with this in mind that we have written the following text, ending with some considerations on the conditions under which our work is carried out, as the limited time available to us for our professional duties does not allow us to do more. The municipality of Caála (where the Teófilo Duarte Elementary Teacher Training School is located) covers almost exclusively plateau terrain at varying altitudes, but always around a thousand metres or more, somewhat rugged and cut by numerous watercourses, which, during the rainy season, suffer from flooding, inundating the banks and giving rise to the appearance of extensive sheets of stagnant water.
