La concepción de la nación española en la ilustración

Este artículo aborda la configuración histórica de la nación española desde la perspectiva de la continuidad en el tiempo que el Antiguo Régimen presuponía a las comunidades políticas. Partiendo de la singular temporalidad de la Monarquía hispánica como un imperio, se ofrece un recorrido por el discurso elaborado para tratar de disipar la amenaza de su decadencia. Dicho discurso, centrado en la adopción del lenguaje del comercio y la ciencia de la economía política, eventualmente permitió ofrecer un diagnóstico de los males morales de los españoles que alejaba la posibilidad de una desnaturalización sin poner en riesgo la ortodoxia católica legitimadora de la monarquía hispánica y sin habilitar un sujeto con capacidad política. El texto permite así reflexionar sobre la dimensión tiempo inherente a toda definición de comunidad, así como sobre los rasgos distintivos de la nación española alumbrada por los proyectistas y reformadores ilustrados, marcada por el peso de rasgos impolíticos. This article deals with the historical configuration of the Spanish nation from the perspective of the continuity in time the Ancien Régime attributed to political communities. Starting from the singular temporality of the Hispanic Monarchy as an empire exposed to decline, it is argued that its singular experience of time consisted in the overcoming of decadence, though its hazard continued to influence discourse in the passage to the 18th century. In that context, discourse adopted the language of commerce and the science of political economy, making it eventually feasible to offer a diagnosis of the moral ills of the Spaniards that avoided the possibility of a denaturalization without jeopardizing the Catholic orthodoxy that legitimized the Hispanic monarchy and without empowering a subject with political capacity. The text thus allows reflection on the time dimension inherent to any definition of community, as well as on the distinctive features of the Spanish nation built by the Enlightenment planners and reformers, marked by the weight of impolitic features.

Espelhos de Mercúrio (Mercury’s Mirrors) approaches representations of trade and merchants in Iberian Monarchies during the Early Modern period. The papers collected in this volume, authored by researchers from different universities and research centres, show plural views on three guiding lines: the language of trade, mercantile organisation and institutions; mercantile identities and social representation of merchants; and the representation of trade in culture. From the image of commerce in Borbonic Spain to the myth of the decadence of Portuguese commerce in Asia in Linschoten's Itinerario; from the privileges granted to German merchants in 15th-century Portugal to the artistic and religious patronage agenda of the Genoese nation in Andalusia; from the Mesa do Bem Comum in Bahia to the Italian nation in Lisbon; from the ideology embodied in the decorative programme of the Stadhuis in Antwerp to the Spanish mercantile community in Portugal, and from the social and cultural dimensions of the tobacco trade – in this book we put Mercury in the mirror and investigate its reflections in the age of first globalisation.

This article deals with the concept of the Crusade in Francoist discourse, beyond its partaking in propaganda and as a resource for mobilization and legitimization of the regime. Understanding the holy war as a founder of order, it goes through the provisions of the Official State Gazette throughout the regime, showing how the normative framework of Francoism embraced the division between victors and vanquished, founding an order of privileged and subalterns destituting citizenship. It goes on to approach the Crusade from the perspective of its temporality, pointing out the contradictions between the enunciating discourse and the effects of its institutional embodiment. The text ends suggesting the need for a re-signification of the violence at the origin of Franco's order.
La memoria de los Verdugos de 1936 y la cultura de impuni(bili)dad en la democracia posfranquista

Este texto se interesa por los efectos de la producción académica sobre la construcción social del victimario, y se centra en el caso de los victimarios de la guerra española de 1936 y su estatus en la cultura de la democracia posfranquista. Escoge dos obras de especialistas dirigidas al público amplio y rastrea a partir de ellas cómo el tratamiento de los victimarios se encuentra predefinido por un marco que exonera de partida a determinados posibles perpetradores al figurar en la nómina de intelectuales y artistas que conforman el canon cultural del siglo XX. El enfoque alternativo que propone consiste en combinar una hermenéutica de los testimonios de posibles perpetradores con otras fuentes documentales, y escoge como ejemplo el de Dionisio Ridruejo, figura que epitomiza el cambio de identidad en contra del franquismo pero a partir de una profunda implicación en la maquinaria de represión del régimen de Franco, actividad que reclama ser integrada para un estudio completo de la identidad del personaje. This text deals with the effects of scholarly research over the social construction of the perpetrator, reflecting from the case of the Spanish civil war and the status of perpetrators in postFrancoist democracy. By choosing two scholarly essays for the broad public, it how the issue of perpetrators is predefined by a framework that disclaims possible perpetrators due to their recognition as intellectuals and artists shaping the cultural canon of the 20th century. The alternative approach it proposes consists in combining a hermeneutics of the testimonies by possible perpetrators with other documentary sources, and chooses those offered by Dionisio Ridruejo, a major example of identity change against Francoism but departing from a deep implication in the repressive machinery of Franco ́s regime which demands being integrated into a full study of Ridruejo ́s identity.
