Entendido como forma particular de viajar, voluntária e temporária, que organiza um calendário social, o turismo é um equivalente funcional e simbólico das instituições que conferiam significado à vida pré-secularizada; uma "viagem sagrada" que busca entretenimento e ou conhecimento em outros lugares, conforta sentidos de identidade e ou realiza estratégias de distinção . É também uma prática social dinâmica, constituída e constituinte de reconfigurações dos contextos políticos e económicos, territoriais e tecnológicos, sociais e culturais. Pensar em um fenómeno turístico particular impõe, por isso, considerar flutuações entre representações, projetos e práticas mais amplos. Falar do Hotel de Santa Luzia também. O seu programa oito-novecentista de vilegiatura para elites portuguesas e estrangeiras foi discursiva e materialmente nacionalizado pelo Estado Novo, acabando por integrar a rede Pousadas de Portugal, já em contexto democrático. No curso do tempo, os valores que foram o princípio da sua modernidade converteram-se em passado. As diferentes modalidades de pensar e fazer turismo no Hotel espacializam, assim, uma história do turismo português que confirma a natureza processual e até ambígua dos seus processos culturais e práticas sociais. Seen a particular way of voluntary and temporary travelling which organizes a social calendar, tourism is a functional and symbolic equivalent of the institutions that conferred meaning to life before secularization; a “sacred journey” seeking entertainment and/or knowledge, soothing senses of identity and/ or effecting strategies of distinction (Graburn, 1978, citado em Smith, p. 17-33). It is also a dynamic social practice, constituent of and composed by reconfigurations of different political, economic, territorial, technological, social and cultural contexts. Considering a particular tourism phenomenon therefore imposes a reflection on ampler fluctuations between representations, projects and practices. This also applies when talking about the Hotel de Santa Luzia. Its nineteenth century vacation programme for Portuguese and foreign elites was nationalized by the Estado Novo both in discourse and materialization, eventually integrating, once in a democratic context, the Pousadas de Portugal network. Over time, the values sparking off its modernity have become something of the past. Different ways of thinking and making tourism in the Hotel so spatialize a history of Portuguese tourism, confirming the processual and even ambiguous nature of its cultural and social practices.

Inauguradas à imagem de casas de campo para uma experiência de portugalidade nos anos 1940, as Pousadas são hoje apreciadas como espaços da história em lugares de tradição onde a autenticidade da cultura é mediada por dispositivos de modernidade. Ao longo de sete décadas, a rede hoteleira foi ampliada e reconfigurada por repertórios discursivos e materiais de cultura e passado que anunciam as flutuações dos seus entendimentos e usos, permitindo pensar as Pousadas como catálogo de modalidades de representação da identidade nacional. O espaço construído não é, todavia, o produto estático de uma intenção, mas a materialidade de negociações entre contextos ideológicos, económicos, sociais e tecnológicos, experiências fenomenológicas e representações simbólicas. Objetificando estes processos, a cultura material é mais que um diagrama de ordem social ou suporte passivo de significados; ela dá forma às relações dialógicas entre pessoas e coisas que têm formas, usos, histórias, valores e agências particulares.
Tradition and modernity intertwining in the re-presentation of Portuguese modern architecture

The nexus between tradition and modernity is long-rooted in the intellectual and political discourses about a Portuguese architecture identity, either as a dialogue construed as a national specificity, or as a dichotomy that stresses different actors' distinct and even opposing cultural understandings and political uses of categories of culture and time. Recently, however, the history and critique of modernism in architecture has overcome the mainstream readings of its corpus, mitigating its orthodoxy, and disclosing long-standing relationships between modern architecture proposals and vernacular settlings. Such rereading has triggered a revision of Portuguese history of architecture, in particular regarding the gate-keeping conceptions of Portugal as an isolated and peripheral country, and the political stances of particular architectural productions. This paper aims to discuss the extent of the tradition-modernity bindings in the spacialisation of a Portuguese identity in architectural discourses. In this scope, it will look into the survey on the 20th century Portuguese architecture conducted by the Portuguese architects between 2003 and 2006, as an expression of how Portuguese modern architecture is being emically construed. Taking into account its process and outcomes, and its authors' purposes and reasoning, the paper will examine its modes and hues, evaluating the dynamics beyond the production of a history of architecture and its relating to broader processes of imagining the past and culture in Portugal.
