  • Untangling the link between iron and the activity of the antifungal drug caspofungin
Publication . Rodrigues, Andreia Dóris Pedras
"Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are responsible for an unacceptably high number of deaths each year, posing a serious global health threat. Among them, those caused by Candida species, known as in invasive candidiasis (IC), are particularly concerning, especially for critically ill patients who often undergo immunosuppressive or intensive antibacterial therapies(...)"
  • Exploring the synergy between copper and antifungals
    Publication . Gaspar-Cordeiro, A.
"Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are a major health concern, affecting many people worldwide and causing more than 1.2 million deaths per year. Most hospital-acquired IFIs are caused by Candida species, which are natural colonizers of the human microbiota, but can become pathogenic under specific medical contexts. Candida albicans accounts for approximately 50% of all clinical isolates from patients with invasive candidiasis. However, the widespread use of antifungal therapy has favoured the selection of Candida species that are less susceptible to antifungals, such as Candida glabrata. In this sense, finding novel antifungal targets or/and improving the efficacy of currently available drugs is of urgent and utmost importance.(...)".
