The analysis shows that both countries have suffered from an accelerated process of urbanization in the second half of the twentieth century, with transitions and alternancesbetween conservative and democratic regimes. However, they have advanced national urbanistic legislations, effective in implementing their urbanistic instruments. The challenge lies in their implementation and articulation with other sectoral policies, which, in most cases, remain independent and limited in terms of territory, as well as fostering a collective territorial political-administrative culture, involving technicians, managers, the professional community and citizens in general so that they know and apply the regulated instruments in an appropriate manner.16394542porUrban StudiesSDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and CommunitiesA política urbana no Brasil e em PortugalUrban policy in Brazil and PortugalContext and historical evolutionjournal article10.15847/cct.jun2020.040.art04Contexto e evolucão históricahttps://www.scopus.com/pages/publications/85090070453https://revistas.rcaap.pt/cct/article/view/18533
