Using quarterly data from the Portuguese Employment Survey, we estimate the effect of school closures on weekly hours worked by parents of children under 12 years old, using a differences-in differences approach. Our results show that school closures led to significant reductions in the labour supply of mothers. These findings highlight the gendered nature of the burden of childcare, suggesting the need for policy interventions to support working parents, particularly mothers, during times of school closures and other disruptions to childcare arrangementsengSchool closuresParental labour supplyCovid-19PortugalGenderimbalancesChildcareDifferences-in-differencesFixed effectsPanel dataThe consequences of school closures on parental hours worked and gender inequality: evidence from Portugalmaster thesis203363892
