This thesis examines whether competition authorities should be less restrictive in evaluating such mergers or keep the traditional requirements. Drawing on the Dutch Sustainability Guidelines, EU drafted Horizontal Guidelines on sustainability, and real-life cases, I analyze the potential positive effects or disadvantages of allowing mergers on that basis. Through a theoretical model, I evaluate the welfare and green effects resulting from these mergers. The findings offer valuable insights into the role of competition policy in promoting a more sustainable future.engCompetition policySustainabilityMergersGreenwashingEnvironmental regulationConsumer welfareAntitrust lawExternalitiesSustainable productionGreen mergers: balancing competition and sustainability goalsmaster thesis203516060
