Foi neste período que o regime ditatorial português reiniciou uma política de abertura e propaganda internacional, participando em feiras e bienais. Partindo da representação nestes eventos, analisa-se o papel atribuído à arte moderna portuguesa na promoção de Portugal no exterior e na construção de uma imagem que integrava inevitavelmente pressupostos contraditórios: modernidade/ tradição e internacionalismo/ etnocentrismo. A descoberta e consagração de Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso (1887-1918) neste período exemplifica o modo como o regime se apropriou da arte moderna portuguesa para reivindicar o seu lugar na Europa do pós-guerra e defender a sua matriz estética e histórica. Souza-Cardoso foi ainda pretexto para os artistas portugueses refletirem sobre a realidade artística e cultural do país e a sua projeção no contexto artístico internacional. This paper aims to draw attention to the 1950s’ historical and artistic relevance in Portugal. It was during this period that the Portuguese regime took up a strategy of international dialogue and promotion by participating in fairs and biennials abroad. Portuguese representations in these international events provide a starting point for assessing the role played by Portuguese modern art in the country’s international promotion and in the creation of an image that would inevitably encompass contradictory terms: modernity/ tradition, internationalism and ethnocentrism. The discovery and national acclaim of Amadeo de Souza Cardoso’s work in this period bring forward an example of the State’s appropriation of Portuguese modern art in order to claim its standing in post-war Europe and, at the same time, defend a national identity and aesthetic.
