Most hospital-acquired IFIs are caused by Candida species, which are natural colonizers of the human microbiota, but can become pathogenic under specific medical contexts. Candida albicans accounts for approximately 50% of all clinical isolates from patients with invasive candidiasis. However, the widespread use of antifungal therapy has favoured the selection of Candida species that are less susceptible to antifungals, such as Candida glabrata.
