The distinction between medieval inquisitions (thirteenth to fifteenth centuries) and modern inquisitions (fifteenth to nineteenth centuries) has tended to relegate to the background figures considered to be survivals. This study looks at the question of book censorship in relation to the inquisitors in France and Franche-Comté in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
