Rooted in the emerging concept of the Blue Economy (BE), the thesis underscores the BE's commitment to achieving economic growth while safeguarding a robust ocean ecosystem. It builds on prior literature recognizing the pivotal role played by sustainable entrepreneurs in fostering innovation, nature preservation, and livelihood support. The study focuses specifically on the recent emergence of blue entrepreneurship, addressing marine environmental challenges through entrepreneurial activities. Delving into the Portuguese entrepreneurial ecosystem (EE) and blue startups, the research employs a qualitative approach with 16 interviews involving industry, startup, and investor experts. Key insights emerge, highlighting the significance of entrepreneurial education for marine scientists, fostering collaboration between science and business students, and establishing a supportive regulatory framework. Ultimately, this thesis makes a substantial contribution by analyzing existing barriers and opportunities in the Portuguese Blue Economy, providing actionable guidelines for blue entrepreneurs.engBlue economyBlue entrepreneurshipPortugalEntrepreneurial ecosystemVenture capitalFundingMaking waves: an investigation of Portugal´s blue economy - exploring areas of improvement and opportunities in the entrepreneurial ecosystemmaster thesis203864638
