  • Cavalos, aves, cães, leões
Publication .
This article explores the deep relevance of the presence of animals in The Lusiad. Far from being a mere accessory resource in the Camões epic, the mention of animals and the animalization of some human characters are part of the significant, basic axes of this poem, especially in passages related to fury or passion.

  • Quare?
Publication .
The authors mention the appearance of a new Upper Palaeolithic engraved on granite outdoors, in the Côa Valley, which enriches local artistic manifestations declared World Heritage by UNESCO. The new finding was identified at the Faia site, a deep gorge characterised by its unique monumentality in the local context. As a consequence, there are now three Palaeolithic rocks at the site, with stylistic characteristics that indicate a diachrony between the late Gravettian and early Magdalenian (20 to 18 thousand years ago, approximately). The new Palaeolithic rock constitutes a renewed source of interest of the world’s only site featuring rock art on granite.
The Court of the Holy Office was one of the institutions that punished sexual dissidences such as sodomy. We resort to exceptional cases of women who deviated from the normative model of femininity of that time, having committed the crimes of sodomy foeminarum and heterosexual sodomy, condemned by the Lisbon Inquisition between 1591 and 1639. This documentation is essential to understand the inquisitorial perception and positioning about female sexual deviations, in addition to configuring notable cases of sexual transgression in a society that repressed sexual practices that did not have the sole purpose of procreation.
  • Estratégias femininas para solucionar problemas amorosos
Publication . Leão, Indira; Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (FCSH); Universidade de Coimbra
Witchcraft was one of the crimes punished by Inquisition between the 16th and 18th centuries. Through the analysis of the inquisitorial processes against the witches, we are able to understand which practices were and what were the reasons that led them to resort to practices worthy of condemnation. The existence of women who resorted to superstitions and magical practices in order to solve love problems, triggered denunciations against them and condemnations. Based on the analysis of five cases of women convicted of witchcraft by the Court of the Holy Office of Lisbon between 1664 and 1698 we will understand what were the magical practices used by the defendants to maintain romantic relationships, which were shared among them, forming a possible women's solidarity network to resolve everyday issues. The inquisitorial sources will be essential to understand what the institution's position in the cases studied, besides showing strategies of personal resistance on the part of the defendants in relation to the charges against them. In short, we intend to contribute to the expansion of historiographical knowledge about the magical practices shared among women convicted of witchcraft and reflecting on their resistance strategies in the course of their processes.
  • Lustosa, Isabel. O jornalista que imaginou o brasil
Publication . Lisboa, João Luís; Departamento de História (DH); CHAM - Centro de Humanidades
  • Ria de Aveiro F
Publication . Lopes, Gonçalo C.; Bettencourt, José; Teixeira, André; CHAM - Centro de Humanidades; Departamento de História (DH); Universidad del Norte
The Ria de Aveiro F site was discovered during preventive archaeological works carried out in the scope of the 2002 expansion of Aveiro’s harbour into the Ria de Aveiro, a lagoon system located in northern Portugal which played a great role in the salt trade of the Early Modern period. Despite the global destruction of the context caused by the dredging works, several well preserved structural elements were recovered. They belonged to two ships, a carvel-built one and a clinker-built one. The former features several construction characteristics that are common in the Mediterranean. The latter possibly corresponds to a small support boat. Beside the structural findings, several rigging elements wooden and rope artifacts, some pottery shards, ballast stones and a limestone cannonball were also recovered. The global study of the findings allowed to assign these remains to a chronology around the first half of the 16th century. Wood identification analysis were recently carried out; the results indicate the use of tropical, South American species in the construction of the clinker-built vessel. This data allows us to suggest that this site may belong to an initial phase of the relationship between the Americas and the Iberian Peninsula.
  • Provincializing History
Publication . Neves, José Manuel Viegas; Cardão, Marcos; Instituto de História Contemporânea (IHC); Departamento de História (DH); Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Instituto de História Contemporânea
This interview was held in Lisbon in January 2020. At the time Dipesh Chakrabarty was visiting the city where we live to participate as a keynote speaker in a congress on the Anthropocene, organized by Fundação Culturgest and Centro Interuniversitário de História das Ciências e da Tecnologia. Nevertheless, this interview focuses exclusively on Provincializing Europe - Postcolonial Thought and Historical Difference. The book was first published by Princeton University Press in 2000. At that point, Dipesh Chakrabarty was already living in the USA, teaching at the University of Chicago, where he still remains a professor, although in the last ten years his main interest has become climate change and the challenges it presents to the discipline of History and the Humanities, not to mention to humanity itself. Throughout the last two decades, Provincializing Europe became one of the most influential books in the field of History, with far-reaching implications for theoretical debates on the status of the discipline, ranging from the ethical to the methodological dimensions of its practice. Planned to be part of Práticas da História special issue on the 20th anniversary of Provincializing Europe, our conversation with Dipesh Chakrabarty covers, among other issues, his formative years, his move to Australia and his relation with Marxism.
