- Planning the new city to the west of Lisbon. Crossing urban and transport expertise in the project of the coastal road (1931-1948)Publication . Sousa, M. LuísaThe construction of the coastal road from Lisbon to Cascais, promoted by the public works program of the Portuguese nationalistic Centennial Commemorations (1940), was one of the “old aspirations of the capital of the Empire”: it structured urban sprawl in the area to the west of Lisbon, as part of urban planning of Lisbon and its neighbouring regions; it materialized an agenda for the promotion of tourism, the “great facade of nationality,” and finally, it contributed to the propaganda of the work of the Estado Novo (New State) dictatorship and its makers. This chapter follows how the expertise of foreign urban planners inspired by the garden-city model and of Portuguese road engineers influenced by the recent European motorways (built in Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany) were brought together and interchanged to plan the “new Lisbon” designed along the axis of the river mouth of Tagus and to foster new (auto)mobilities. The implantation of this road in the riverside area, starting in Belém, one of the most emblematic spaces of the nationality celebrations and of the empire reinforced the imperial mystique of the dictatorship, by materializing the “work of historical continuity of the Estado Novo” that the Centennial Commemorations intended to celebrate.
- The graphing calculator as an instrument of semiotic mediation in the construction of the function conceptPublication . Subtil, Manuela; Domingos, António; DCSA - Departamento de Ciências Sociais Aplicadas; UIED - Unidade de Investigação Educação e DesenvolvimentoAccording to some authors, the graphing calculator facilitates the students' ability to reflect and generalize, when involved in performing exploratory tasks, leading them to the construction of mathematical knowledge (Doorman, Drijvers, Dekker, Heuvel-Panhuizen, Lange e Wijers, 2007). We present the resolution of the task: "My hand", with the graphing calculator, whose purpose was to consolidate the concept of function and to understand when a cartesian graph corresponds to the representation of a function. On the other hand, looking at the artifact, the graphing calculator, as a instrument of semiotic mediation, we intend to analyze how the transition from personal meanings to mathematical meanings (Mariotti, 2018) was developed, in the resolution of the task.
- Miguel Bombarda e a Escola de Investigação de Marck Athias (1897-1910)Publication . Amaral, Isabel Maria da Silva Pereira; DCSA - Departamento de Ciências Sociais AplicadasMiguel Bombarda foi um dinamizador por excelência da comunidade médica de Lisboa entre finais do séc. XIX e princípios do séc. XX ao assumir protagonismo na alteração radical das suas estruturas sociais, logísticas e epistemológicas, que se tornariam decisivas para a edificação da escola de investigação[1] de Marck Athias, criando assim precedentes para a emergência de novas disciplinas biomédicas de cariz experimental na Faculdade de Medicina de Lisboa durante a primeira metade do séc.XX. Em termos muito gerais podemos afirmar que a escola de investigação de Marck Athias foi dirigida por um líder carismático e cientificamente conceituado que foi capaz de congregar ao longo do seu percurso científico, um conjunto de seguidores fieis a um programa de investigação inovador que se foi expandindo a outras áreas disciplinares. Este programa desenvolveu-se em laboratórios razoavelmente bem apetrechados e com financiamento próprio e era difundido em canais de difusão que a escola criou e dinamizou. Neste estudo interessa-nos reflectir sobre a forma como Miguel Bombarda e a escola de investigação de Marck Athias se intersectaram, no período que medeia a chegada de Marck Athias a Lisboa, em 1897, e o assassinato de Miguel Bombarda, em 1910. Fá-lo-emos tomando em linha de conta os critérios de análise anteriormente referidos, nos quais o materialismo e determinismo bombardianos[2] directa ou indirectamente se reflectiram. [1] O estudo de escolas de investigação, enquanto metodologia utilizada em História da Ciência permite efectuar uma abordagem simultânea dos factores de ordem social e de natureza cognitiva nos processos de transformação da ciência. Desta forma, a sua aplicação à análise da emergência de novas áreas disciplinares, utilizada desde a década de 70, foi também aplicada ao caso português ao ser estudada a escola de investigação de Marck Athias.
