- The Tua Valley: symbolical and technological landscapePublication . Spero, Ellan; Pereira, Hugo Silveira; DCSA - Departamento de Ciências Sociais Aplicadas; CIUHCT - Centro Interuniversitário de História das Ciências e da Tecnologia; Universidade do Porto, Faculdade de LetrasThe Tua Valley, in northern Portugal, is undergoing an intense transformation with the conclusion of the construction of the Foz-Tua dam. As a consequence, part of the valley and part of the centennial Tua railway will be flooded by the dam’s lake. However the complete consequences of this undertaking are yet to be fully known and understood. In this paper we do not aim to judge the decision to build the dam or to close the railway line. Our goal is to display the technological evolution of the Tua Valley and question the interpretation of this region as both symbolic and technological landscape. We wish to contribute to the debate about understanding landscape, and discuss the frontier between technology and landscape, two realities that are often seen as incompatible and disagreeing
- Os trabalhadores do conhecimento num setor tradicional: o caso dos designers do vestuárioPublication . Paulos, Margarida Ramires; Moniz, António Brandão; DCSA - Departamento de Ciências Sociais Aplicadas; Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, Centro de Investigação e Estudos de Sociologia | Editora Mundos SociaisThe restructuring of work in the industrial sector brought about by the development of the “knowledge society” has led important changes in organisations and their workers. The transforming industry is one of the main sectors that have undergone abrupt changes in the last few years. The clothing subsector was one of the first to use different forms of flexibility in order to remain competitive. This article analyses this change process and its effects on the industry's “knowledge professions”, particularly in terms of its application to the professional group “clothes designers”. In order to understand the impact that the restructuring of their work has had on this group, the authors analyse the changes that have taken place in their working conditions, qualifications and skills, use of knowledge, professional identity and career trajectories.
- Joaquim Tomás Lobo d'Ávila, conde de ValbomPublication . Pereira, Hugo Silveira; CIUHCT - Centro Interuniversitário de História das Ciências e da Tecnologia; DCSA - Departamento de Ciências Sociais Aplicadas; University of CoimbraThe Regeneração was characterized by the careers of several men of science and technology, who sought to apply the scientific and technological concepts they had learned in European schools to the modernization of Portugal. Amongst this elite, we find the name of Joaquim Tomás Lobo d'Ávila, earl of Valbom. In this paper we will draw this engineer's biographical sketch, using the scientific persona concept. We will use a diverse array of sources that will allow us to follow his career as a politician and diplomat, but mainly as a technocratic engineer. We aim to show the relevance of Lobo d'Ávila individual history in the development strategy followed in Portugal in the second half of the 19th century. Also, in a double perspective, we aim to analyse the importance of his individual history in the formation of the technocratic persona and the relevance of this persona in his own trajectory.
