Authors: Correia, Ana Maria R
Abstract: The INOTEC-Empresa – the Technological Innovation Plan for Enterprises in the
Autonomous Region of the Azores (RAA) - was developed in 2006-2007, at the
request of the Regional Government, with the main aim of promoting innovation
within small and medium enterprises. The methodological approach used in the
development of the INOTEC – Empresa Plan was designed to obtain a comprehensive
view of regional actors and included a document review, participation of the
various actors through interviews, a collection of statements from RAA – Região
Autónoma dos Açores – entrepreneurs, academics, public leaders and other key
players, together with an analysis of their views and a survey of the innovation
dynamics of the most relevant Azorean enterprises. The INOTEC-Empresa – the
Technological Innovation Plan for Enterprises – comprises seven programmes aimed
at promoting innovation in the Region. This paper focuses on the Programmes for
Qualification of Human Resources and the Development of Scientific and
Technological Capacities for Innovation. Some socio-economic data and the
metrics selected to assess and benchmark the implementation of the Plan will als</summary>

Practice for Portuguese Master's Students
Authors: Neto, M.; Correia, A. M.

Abstract: Web 2.0 software in general and wikis in particular have been receiving growing
attention as they constitute new and powerful tools, capable of supporting
information sharing, creation of knowledge and a wide range of collaborative
processes and learning activities. This paper introduces briefly some of the new
opportunities made possible by Web 2.0 or the social Internet, focusing on those
offered by the use of wikis as learning spaces. A wiki allows documents to be
created, edited and shared on a group basis; it has a very easy and efficient
markup language, using a simple Web browser. One of the most important
characteristics of wiki technology is the ease with which pages are created and
edited. The facility for wiki content to be edited by its users means that its
pages and structure form a dynamic entity, in permanent evolution, where users
can insert new ideas, supplement previously existing information and correct
errors and typos in a document at any time, up to the agreed final version. This
paper explores wikis as a collaborative learning and knowledge-building space
and its potential for supporting Virtual Communities of Practice (VCoPs). In the
academic years (2007/8 and 2008/9), students of the Business Intelligence module
at the Master's programme of studies on Knowledge Management and Business
Intelligence at Instituto Superior de Estatistica e Gestao de Informacao of the
Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal, have been actively involved in the
creation of BIWiki - a wiki for Business Intelligence in the Portuguese
language. Based on usage patterns and feedback from students participating in
this experience, some conclusions are drawn regarding the potential of this
technology to support the emergence of VCoPs; some provisional suggestions will
be made regarding the use of wikis to support information sharing, knowledge
creation and transfer and collaborative learning in Higher Education.</summary>

Abstract: On a mobile ad-hoc network environment, where the resources are scarce, the
knowledge about the network's link state is essential to optimize the routing
procedures. This paper presents a study about different pheromone evaluation
models and how they react to possible changes in traffic rate. Observing how the
pheromone value on a link changes, it could be possible to identify certain
patterns which can indicate the path status. For this study, the behavior of the
Ant System evaluation model was compared with a Temporal Active Pheromone model
(a biological approach) and a Progressive Pheromone Reduction model with and
without a maximum pheromone limit.</summary>

Abstract: This chapter introduces a case study of adult students in Portugal. It was&#xD;
developed by the Portuguese partner of the PRILHE (Promoting Reflective&#xD;
Independent Learning in HE) project consortium. This was a project funded by the&#xD;
European Commission Socrates Adult Education Programme (113869-CP-1-2004-1-UK-&#xD;
GRUNDTVIG-G1PP). In Portugal, adults may choose Higher Education Institutions[1]&#xD;
(HEI) or Technological Schools (TS) to pursue their education. The case study&#xD;
shows that there are similarities and differences between students from TS and&#xD;
Universities, mostly related with the approaches students have to learning and&#xD;
the way teachers take into consideration these approaches. It seems that TS have&#xD;
“best practices” that could usefully be implemented by other institutions. The&#xD;
chapter is organised as follows: first, we contextualize LLL development as an&#xD;
element within the political objective of creation of a knowledge economy,&#xD;
especially in the context of the European Union's Lisbon Agenda, linking&#xD;
education with employment. The different access routes non-traditional adult&#xD;
students can take to access Universities in the Portuguese higher education (HE)&#xD;
system are then briefly described. The PRILHE project, its main objectives, the&#xD;
participant institutions in the consortium, and the methodology used to gather&#xD;
and analyse data are briefly explained. Finally, the results of the Portuguese&#xD;
case within this project are presented and discus
